State Volleyball Tournament Semifinals Today

volleyballCedar Rapids, Iowa — It’s the semi final round of the state volleyball tournament Thursday in Cedar Rapids. Four northwest Iowa teams will be in action.

In Class 3A top ranked MOC-Floyd Valley downed 5th ranked Union 3-1.  Set scores were 26-24, 25-23, 25-13.  The Lady Dutch earned the right to play for the #a Championship tomorrow (Friday) at 2 pm, against Kuemper Catholic.  MOC Floyd Valley comes into the championship game with a 34-6 season record, while Kuemper brings a 28-4 season record into the contest.

In Tuesday’s quarterfinals, Sheldon dropped a 3-0 decision to Mount Vernon on set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-21. The Orabs end the year at 34-5, ranked number two in the final 3A poll having made their third State Tournament appearance in the last five years. Stat leaders for the Orabs included Jessica VanBeek with 12 kills. Sami Kleinwolterink had 20 assists. The digs leader was Emily Johnson with 29. Johnson also was the serve leader going 11-of-11.

In the Class 2A Quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon, 2nd ranked Western Christian advanced with a 3-0 win over Grundy Center on set scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-15. Western will meet 3rd ranked Sumner Fredricksburg at 4pm Thursday. They advanced with a 3-1 win over Hinton. Western was led by Haley Moss and Ema Altena with 11 kills each. Jamie Gesink had 39 assists. Summer Jansen had 16 digs. Kenzie Bousema was the serve leader going 17-of-19.

Western enters the semis with a 44-2 record while Sumner Fredricksburg enters at 38-3.

In Class 1A 4th ranked Central Lyon playing in the State Tournament for the first time eliminated five time defending champion Tripoli who came in 7th ranked. The final score was 3-1 on set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23. The Lions now 28-6 meet 2nd ranked and 36-4 Janesville who ousted 11th ranked Springville 3-0. The 1A semifinals will be played at 6pm tonight. The Lions were led by Sarah Halse with 16 kills. Ivy Sieperda had 22 assists with Claire Snyder adding 16. Angel Rassmussen was the digs leader with 23. Ashley Boer was the serve leader with a perfect 19-of-19 performance.

5th ranked LeMars Gehlen at 24-11 will meet top ranked and 46-4 Holy Trinity in the other 6pm semifinal.

Championship matches in all classes will be decided on Friday beginning with the 5A Championship at noon and wrapping up with the 1A Championship scheduled for 6pm Friday night. We’ll bring you coverage of Western Christian and Sumner Fredricksburg beginning with pregame at 3:45 this afternoon. We’ll follow that with Central Lyon and Janesville.
