Substate Games Set For Tuesday in Class 2A And 1A Baseball

baseballSubstate games will decide State Tournament berths Tuesday night across Iowa in Class 2A and 1A. Here in the northwest corner of the state the 2A Substate 1 matchup has Western Christian and Spirit Lake getting together in Spencer.

Western reached the substate round with a 9-2 win over Sioux Center at Open Space Park Saturday night. Spirit Lake posted a 13-3 five inning home win over North Union.

Western has three players hitting .300 or better. They include senior Tyler Van Engen at .365, junior Colton Van Otterloo at .308 and sophomore Brady Van’t Hul hitting .302.

The pitching staff is led by Seniors Tyler Van Engen and Grant Van Bemmel. Van Engen is 6-1 with a 2.23 era. Van Bemmel is 4-4 with a 3.60 era.

Spirit Lake has 3 players hitting .300 or better as well. The trio of seniors includes Nic Amundson at .351, Brandon Stoll at .346 and Paul Brown at .338.

The Indians pitching staff is led by seniors Paul Brown and Brandon Stoll. Stoll is 7-4 with a .88 era. Brown is 3-4 with a 3.35 era.

Western Christian won both of the regular season meetings. The Wolfpack won 2-0 on June 12th and 7-6 on July 1st. Western is 18-9 coming into the contest while Spirit Lake stands at 15-10.

In Class 1A Substate 1 West Lyon takes a 23-6 record into their meeting with 24-8 Remsen St Mary’s at Remsen. West Lyon is led by senior James Van Beek with a .388 batting average. Van Beek also leads the pitching staff with an 11-1 record and .48 era. He’s struck out 144 batters in 73 and two thirds innings.

Remsen St Mary’s is led by sophomore Elliot Conover hitting .349. Junior Matt Wesselmann leads the pitching staff with an 8-2 record and .62 era. Wesselmann has struck out 84 batters in 78 and two third innings.

The substate game will be the first meeting this season between the two teams.
