The Nighthawks beat the Cherokee Washington Braves in district play 55-6 Friday night at George Hicks Field in Cherokee.
Boyden Hull Rock Valley put together 28 first quarter points en route to the victory. The first Nighthawks score came at the 9:21 mark of the first quarter. Andrew Van Ginkel threw a 38 yard touchdown pass to Jerod Hansen making the score 7-0. On the following Braves possession Christian Lundy received a Lundquist pass only to get the ball stripped by Blake Eichmann. Eichmann picked up the ball and returned it 22 yards for the score. With 8:59 left in the first quarter the Nighthawks had a 14-0 lead. Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored on their next possession after Andrew Van Ginkel was able to intercept the Braves quarterback Levi Lundquist’s pass. Van Ginkel followed that up by finishing off an 88 yard drive with a 75 yard touchdown run. With 3:38 left in the first quarter, the Nighthawks were up 21-0.
Cherokee answered with a 69 yard drive on the next possession. Levi Lundquist was able to bootleg his way to a 44 yard touchdown run. The Braves drive had a 1:32 duration and made the score 21-6 with 2:38 left in the first quarter. The Nighthawks than capped off the 28 point first quarter with a 43 yard drive in 1:20. The scoring play on the Boyden Hull Rock Valley drive came when Andrew Van Ginkel found Brady Moser on a 15 yard touchdown pass.
Van Ginkel added two more scores in the second quarter. He first blocked the Lundquist punt in the Braves endzone, than recovered the football for the score. With that special teams score, Boyden Hull Rock Valley than led 35-6 with 11:13 left in the half. Van Ginkel than followed that up after the Nighthawks defense forced a 3 and out and took over on the Braves 46 yard line. Van Ginkel needed one pass to Jerod Hansen for 46 yards to score. With 9:51 left in the first half, the Nighthawks were up 42-6.
In the second half , Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored two more times. The first score came on a 38 yard pass from backup quarterback Brady Post to backup wide receiver Justin Schmidt. The score increased the Nighthawks lead to 49-6 with 4:48 left in the 3rd quarter.
Later on in the 4th quarter backup running back Miles Van Maanen finished off a 24 yard drive on a 24 yard run with 1:19 left in the game. The final score was 55-6 in favor of the Nighthawks.
Boyden Hull Rock Valley improves to 7-1 overall, 3-1 in the district. The Nighthawks will face Central Lyon George Little Rock in Hull to decide second and third place in the district. Cherokee Washington falls to 0-8 overall, 0-5 in the district and will travel to Orange City to face the winless Unity Christian Knights.
