Village Northwest Unlimited Panthers to Hit Hardwood at Dordt And Northwestern

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAVillage Northwest Unlimited has announced that the Village Panthers Special Olympics basketball team will play in a scrimmage at the Dordt College vs Morningside home basketball game and the Northwestern College vs Concordia home game. The scrimmage at Dordt College will take place on January 23, 2013 at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa during halftime of both the women’s and men’s games, which begin at 6pm. The Panthers play for 10 minutes in order to display their talents and receive support from the fans at Dordt College. Stacie Jorgensen, Director of Advancement at Village Northwest Unlimited states “Dordt College has been a great partner in the past and we are happy to share this evening of basketball with them.” Dordt’s Athletic Director, Glenn Bouma, shared “we are excited to have the Village Panthers be a part of our game day. It’s another great opportunity for us to partner with Village Northwest and support people with disabilities.” Dordt College also hosts indoor winter Special Olympics events and outdoor track & field events.

The scrimmage at Northwestern College in Orange City will take place Saturday February 2, 2013, at halftime of the women’s game vs. Concordia at the Northwestern College Bultman Center. The women’s game will begin at 2pm. The Panthers will scrimmage for 10 minutes. Jorgensen commented,” we are thrilled to be able to partner with Northwestern College to give our Special Olympics athletes a chance to perform and show their abilities. Many people do not have a chance to see people with a disability perform in athletic events and they are usually impressed by their ability and determination so it will be a great opportunity for people to experience this firsthand.”

Northwestern College Athletics Director Barry Brandt shared that “We are pleased to have the Village Panthers as our guests! This will be a big day for Raider athletics as we also induct our Hall of Fame recipients and host the Northwest Iowa Fellowship of Christian Athletes Day of Champions. Come out and enjoy an exciting afternoon of basketball!” There will be free will donation baskets at the concession stands and information table in the lobby at both games.

Village Northwest Unlimited officials have also announced other dates for the Village Panthers’ basketball schedule for this winter. The schedule will include two home games and two away games. In cooperation with Mike Niece, Sheldon Community Schools Athletic Director and the Sheldon Orabs basketball teams, the Panthers will again perform at halftime of two Orab basketball games. The first game took place on Friday, January 4 and the next Panthers performance will be on Saturday January 26 at halftime of the boy’s game against Sergeant Bluff-Luten.

The Panthers qualified for the State Special Olympics basketball tournament, which will take place in Iowa City on March 15-16. Last year, the Panthers took 3rd place at the State Tournament for Special Olympics and in 2011 the team won first place at the tournament.
