West Lyon and Western Christian in State Semifinals Thursday

A pair of area teams are in the State Boy’s Basketball semifinals Thursday. West Lyon squares off against Keota in the 1A semifinals at 10:30. Pregame on KIWA FM begins at 10:25. aA 2pm Thursday afternoon Western Christian will meet Cascade with pregame at 1:55. We’ll stream from the website as well at www.kiwaradio.com.
In the 1A quarterfinals on Monday eight seed West Lyon shocked top seed and unbeaten Newell Fonda 72-57 to get to the semifinals. Fourth seed Keota who eliminated EastonValley 56-47.
West Lyon won their quarterfinal game in the fourth quarter as they outscored Newell Fonda 30-11 in the final eight minutes to get the win 72-57. The other jump out number for West Lyon was a 20-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Wildcats put four players in double figures with Kyle Groeneweg leading a balanced attack with 18 points. Kacey Merlie added 14, Bandon Snyder hit for a dozen and Kaleb Heyer pumped in 11.
West Lyon takes a 22-5 record into the semis while Keota comes in at 25-1.
In Class 2A top seed Western Christian secured their spot in today’s semi final with a 76-53 win over 8th seed Albia Monday night. The Wolfpack will meet five seed Cascade of Western Dubuque who pulled the mild upset of four seed South Hamilton Jewell winning 56-40.
The Wolfpack never trailed after jumping out to a 14-0 lead to start the contest. By halftime Western led 46-24. At the end of the third quarter the Blue Demons had cut the lead to 11 at 56-45. Western outscored Albia 20-8 in the final eight minutes and put the game away 76-53.
Taylor Feenstra had a huge double-double with a game high 26 points and 20 rebounds. The Wolfpack’s other big man Josh Van Lingen added 19 points. The two were a big reason Western outscored Albia in the paint by a 36-8 margin.
The Wolfpack take a 25-0 record into the semifinals while Cascade comes in at 22-3. both games will be broadcast live on KIWA FM 105.3 and streamed from the website at www.kiwaradio.com.
