Western opened with a run in the top of the first inning as Tyler Van Engen was hit by a pitch and later scored on an rbi single to the left side of the infield off the bat of Brady Van’t Hul.
Sioux Center answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Rylan Stewart singled and later scored when Drew Kortlever tripled to the gap in right-center. On the throw from the relay from the outfield the ball went off Kortlever’s helmet as he slid in head first. The ball rolled into four territory down the left field line and he was able to score from third.
After that Grant Van Bemmel settled in and threw shut out ball the rest of the way. Meanwhile the Wolfpack had eight different players score at least one run as the offense produced throughout the batting order.
From the number nine spot Justin Faber had a pair of RBI’s, scored a run and reached base in two of his four trips to the plate.
Western scored a run in the second to tie it at 2-2 then took control with a three run third inning and two more in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Van Bemmel the senior left hander went the distance for the win giving up just 1 earned run on 4 hits. He struck out 7 and walked one.
With the win Western Christian improves to 18-9 on the year while Sioux Center wraps up the year at 16-13.
The Wolfpack move on to the Substate game on Tuesday in Spencer. They will meet Lakes Conference foe Spirit Lake who won the District 2 title with a 13-3 home win over North Union. Spirit Lake is now 15-10 on the year. North Union finishes at 25-9.
in two regular season meetings Western defeated Spirit Lake 2-0 on June 12th at home and 7-6 on July 1st in Spirit Lake.
