Western, Gehlen Earn State Berths

Region volleyball titles were decided in Class 1A and 2A Wednesday night in Iowa. A pair of teams will head back to State following title match wins.
In a match broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3 LeMars Gehlen won a hard fought 3-1 decision over George Little Rock. The 7 th ranked Jays dropped the first set 23-25 then came back to win the next three on scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-20.
The Mustangs were led by Taylor Carstensen with 5 blocks and 14-of-14 serving with two ace serves. Shannon Klaassen went 12-of-12 with 1 ace. She also had a team high 10 kills. Abby Eben was the digs leader with 6 while Amber Stettnichs had 25 assists.
Gehlen will take a 21-10 record into the lower bracket quarterfinal against 35-5 Tripoli. First serve is set for 6pm on Thursday November 8th.
In Class 2A second ranked Western Christian returns to State following a 3-0 win over 11 th ranked Ridge View in the Region 1 final decided at the MOC Floyd Valley Gym. The Wolfpack won on scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-8.
Brooke Wolterstorff led the team in kills with 11. Ema Altena was the blocks leader with 5. Alissa Pollema had 14 digs. Jamie Gesink had 37 assists. She went 17-of-18 from the serve receive line with 1 ace serve. Kim Kroeze was 18-of-19 with 2 ace serves.
Western will open State Tournament play in the lower bracket quarterfinals. At 3pm Thursday November 8 th the Wolfpack will take a 41-3 record into their meeting with 31-6 Treynor.
With renovations continuing at the U.S. Cellular Center the State Tournament will be held for a second year at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
