Brooke Wolterstorff recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds and top-ranked Western Christian beat No. 2 Lawton-Bronson 75-58 to repeat as state champion.

Wolterstorff was voted captain of the all-tournament team for the second straight year and had plenty of help from her talented teammates.

Shae DeJager added 16 points and nine rebounds. Kim Kroeze scored 12 points and made four steals, while Alissa Pollema had 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Wolfpack prevailed against a courageous effort from Lawton-Bronson, which played the second half without star Josie Kopal, had two players foul out and lost two other players briefly after they collided with each other.

Kopal had 17 points and six rebounds when she smacked the side of her head on the shoulder of a Western Christian player during a scramble for the ball late in the first half. She watched from the bench in the second half as her teammates rallied from a 16-point deficit, cutting the lead to 62-57 on freshman Ali Verzani’s free throw with 5:41 left.

Two seconds later, Verzani collided with teammate Jessica Jager has they turned to run up the floor. Verzani had a cut over her left eye and Jager a bloody nose. As trainers tended to the two, the Western Christian players knelt around the Lawton-Bronson players and prayed with them.

Verzani and Jager returned a couple of minutes later, but Wolterstorff had hit a free throw and made a layup by then to return to momentum to Western Christian, which ran off 13 straight points to secure the victory.

Verzani, a promising 5-foot-10 forward, finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Teammate Ashley Williams scored 12 before fouling out, while Jager had seven points and seven rebounds.

Kopal and DeJager also made the all-tournament team, along with Western Christian’s Erika Douma, Lawton-Bronson’s Taylor King and Maquoketa Valley’s Brooke Wooten.

In addition To Wolterstorff, Erika Douma and Shae DeJager were also named to the All-Tournament Team in 2A.
