Wolfpack Girls Advance To 2A Semifinals

The Western Christian Wolfpack opened the Class 2A Girls State Basketball Tournament with a 47-45 win over Estherville Lincoln Central Monday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. With the win it’s on to the semi finals Thursday at noon where they will they will face top-ranked OA-BCIG, who was a 48-41 winner over West Marshall in the late game Monday night.
After trailing by as much as 12 points in the second half the Wolfpack tied the score at 42-42 and then took the lead 43-42 as Alissa Pollema hit a pair of free throws with 1:26 left to play. Following a foul at the other end Alyssa Johnson of Estherville Lincoln Central tied it at 43-43 as she hit one of two free throw attempts with 1:16 to play. On Western’s next possession Pollema hit a jumper with one minute left and Western was back in front 45-43. At the other end it was Johnson with another jumper and the Midgets tied it again at 45-45 with: 49 seconds to play.
Off a missed shot by the Wolfpack Kim Kroeze put the ball in after the rebound and the Wolfpack had the lead 47-45 with: 06 seconds to play. Kroeze was fouled on the play and following a jump ball tie up Western had possession and ran the in bounds play successfully to kill the clock and move on to the semi finals.
Western had two players in double figures as Pollema ended with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 shooting from the line. Jamie Gesink added a dozen points as well hitting 3-of-3 from the field including a three-point bucket. Gesink went 5-of -6 from the line.
The Midgets had two players in Double figures as Alyssa Johnson hit for 13 points and Allie Sievert pumped in 12 points while pulling down 11 rebounds.
For the 5th ranked Wolfpack now 23-3 it’s on to the semi finals on Thursday. Estherville Lincoln Central ends the year at 24-3.
