Wolfpack Girls Basketball Team Opens State Tournament Play Monday Night

The 5th ranked Western Wolfpack Girls Basketball team opens Class 2A State Tournament play this evening in the quarterfinal round. They will meet Lakes Conference rival Estherville Lincoln Central for a third time this year. Western comes into the tournament with a record of 22-3 while E-LC stands at 24-2. The Midgets were the 2A runner up at last years tournament.
The Wolfpack earned a spot at state following a dominating 94-56 win over 4th ranked Kuemper Catholic in the Region 1 Finals at Cherokee last Monday night.
With the game tied at 26-26 in the second quarter Western went on a 14-0 run that broke the game open and gave them a 40-26 halftime lead. From the start of the run Western would outscore Kuemper 68-30 for the rest of the ballgame. A trio of three point buckets highlighted the run with Kenzie Vande Vegte hitting a pair and Erika Douma adding the other. For the night the Wolfpack would drop 10 three pointers with seven different players doing the damage.
Brook Wolterstorff led the offense with a game high 22 points with Kim Kroeze adding 11. Erika Douma and Brittany VanLingen hit for 9 points each. All told 13 of the 15 Wolfpack players found their way into the scorebook.
The Midgets earned a spot at State with a 43-27 win over Roland Story in a Regional Final played at Algona. Estherville Lincoln Central jumped out to a 15-2 first quarter lead and rode that momentum the rest of the way.
Two juniors led the way as Emily Kirchner and Allie Seivert hit for 11 points each with Seivert pulling down nine rebounds.
During the regular season the teams split with each team oddly winning on the others home floor. The first meeting on January 13 went to Estherville Lincoln Central 42-41. The second meeting on February 7th went to Western Christian 56-37.
We’ll have the broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3 beginning with the pregame at 6:35 and tip off at 6:45 from the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
