Wolfpack Wins Girls 2A Title

    The Western Wolfpack won the school’s first Girls State Basketball Title Friday night as they knocked off Pella Christian 67-57 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

    The Wolfpack opened up a 20-8 first quarter lead and rode that momentum the rest of the way. At the half Western led 33-23. at the end of the third quarter the lead was 49-37 as Western went on to win the 2A title 67-57.

    Western had four players in double figures. Brooke Wolterstorff led the way with 16 points. Jamie Gesink hit for 14. Kim Kroeze and Shae DeJager pumped in 12 points each.

    Pella Christian put four players in double figures as well. Tayler Stursma and Christina Nolte led the way with 14 points each.

    Three-point shooting was one of two key stats in the ballgame as Western hit 5-of-21 attempts while Pella Christian went 0-for-14 from beyond the arc. The other was bench scoring with Western outscoring Pella Christian in bench points 17-1.

    With the win Western Christian wraps up the championship season at 25-3. Pella Christian ends the year at 23-4.

    The Wolfpack had two players named to the All Tournament Team in Class 2A. They were Kim Kroeze and Brooke Wolterstorff who was named captain of the 2A All Tournament Team.
