Dorothy M. Den Hartog

Dorothy M. Den Hartog, age 88, of Sanborn, Iowa formerly of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.

Her funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 25, 2017 at First Reformed Church in Sheldon with Rev. Paul Van Maaren Officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, rural Matlock, Iowa.

Visitation with family present will be from 2 to 4 P.M. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Dorothy Mae Sluijer, daughter of Ed and Sina (Heikens) Sluijer was born April 5, 1929 near Matlock, Iowa. She attended rural school. She married Henry (Hein) Riemersma on January 3, 1947. After their marriage, the couple farmed on the home place from 1948 to 1964. They moved to Sheldon in 1964. Dorothy did laundry work for others for several years then became a nurse’s aide and worked in Sheldon Community Hospital for four years. She then cleaned houses for others for 23 years. Henry passed away on February 5, 1995. She married Don Den Hartog on April 5, 1996 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Don preceded her in death on December 17, 2000. Dorothy passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn, reaching the age of 88 years, 5 months and 16 days.

Dorothy was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon. She enjoyed flowers, birds, crocheting and quilting. She also enjoyed camping, going to air shows and attending sprint car races.

Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her two sons and their spouses, Bob and Marie Riemersma and Jim and Linda Riemersma all of Sheldon; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alice Sluijer of Sand Lake, Michigan; June Den Hartog of Sheldon; Jeanette Den Hartog of Pella, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Don (Glenda) Riemersma of Sheldon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marion Riemersma of George, Iowa: two step sons, Larry (Deb) Den Hartog of Sheldon and Dennis Den Hartog and friend, Terri Keith of Eldridge, Iowa; step daughter, Cheryl (Richard) Gruis of Marion, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, infant sister, Evelyn Doris Sluijer, great granddaughter, Angel Marie McDonough; brother, Loren Sluijer; brothers-in-law, Elmer Den Hartog, Lawrence Den Hartog, Howard Den Hartog and sisters-in-law, Jo Den Hartog, Ethel Kuyper and Lois Van Meeteren.


Marilyn R. Jones

Marilyn R. Jones, 79, of Rapid City, passed away on Tuesday September 19th, 2017 with her husband, Douglas, by her side at the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 27th, 1938 on the family farm near Ocheyedan, Iowa to Merwin and Gladys (Morfitt) Dillehay.  She grew up in Ocheyedan and graduated from Harris High School in 1956. She attended Morningside College and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1958.

Marilyn married Douglas Jones in Harris, Iowa on June 15th, 1958, and from this union two sons were born, Daniel and Steven.  Being a Military family, they lived in several different cities throughout the Unites States before moving to Winner, SD in 1976 where Marilyn opened “Marilyn’s Interiors”.  She relocated the store to Spearfish, SD when they moved there in 1992.  As an accomplished seamstress, Marilyn was talented in her ability to create beautiful custom window coverings, bed spreads, and other accessories.  She also reupholstered many pieces of furniture throughout her career.  Her hobbies included spending time with family and friends, laughing and having a good time no matter what she did.  She also enjoyed watching the ducks at Canyon Lake Park, singing, watching classical and western movies, she especially loved musicals.  After Marilyn was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005, she sold Marilyn’s Interiors and they moved to Sibley Iowa in 2006 before returning to Rapid City, SD in 2015 to be closer to family.

Since Marilyn didn’t have any daughters of her own, she thoroughly loved to spoil and entertain her granddaughters by having sleepovers, watching her favorite movies and musicals with them, taking them on horseback riding adventures, making them beautiful dresses as they were growing up and she never missed the opportunity to go to their sporting events even traveling to Florida to watch them play fast pitch softball while they were in college.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Douglas, Rapid City, SD two sons, Steven (Darla) Jones, Rapid City, SD and Daniel (Brenda) Jones, Norfolk, NE, five grandchildren; Nicole (Lee) Huber, Danielle (Shaun) Sullivan, Michelle (Mike) Worden, Sam & Katie Jones, four great grandchildren; Carter, Cole and KyLee Huber & Graysen Worden, a sister Marjorie Miquelon, and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers; Donald, Dale, Raymond and a great grandson, Brayden Worden.

Visitation with family present will be held on Monday, September 25th, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at South Canyon Baptist Church 3333 W. Chicago St, Rapid City, SD 57702.  Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at South Canyon Baptist Church with interment at Black Hills National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers if you wish, a memorial has been established to the Redfield Care and Rehabilitation Center in Redfield, SD as they took excellent care of Marilyn during the last 6 months of her life.  Memorials and cards of sympathy may be mailed to Osheim Funeral Home at 2700 Jackson Blvd, Rapid City, SD 57702.

Rev. Jeff Filkins age 58 of Hartley, IA, passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, IA on Tuesday, September 19th.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Visitation will be held at the Hartley Funeral Home on Thursday, September 21st from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. A Masonic Rites service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Dean P. Seivert, age 66, of Sheldon passed away on Monday, September 18th at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. His services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, September 22nd at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon, with Father Siby Punnoose officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.

Visitation will be after 4:00 P.M. Thursday, September 21st, with the family present from 5 :00 – 7:00P.M. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. A Scripture Wake Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 P.M. Thursday all at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon.

Elaine Wellendorf age 90 of Ashton, died Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Country View Manor in Sibley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, with Fr. Timothy Hogan, celebrating.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Ashton.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 21st from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton.  There will be a Rosary at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton.

Randy and Terrie Roede

Terrie Roede age 64 of Pierre, SD formerly of Spencer and Sibley, IA and Randy Roede, age 59, of Pierre, SD formerly of Sibley, IA died Sunday, September 17, 2017, near Okaton, SD, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 25th at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, with Reverend Luke Schouten officiating.

Burial will follow in the Baker Township Cemetery rural Melvin, IA.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 24th from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., with family present from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.
