The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a weekly fishing report on Thursdays in an effort to provide the latest information heading into the weekend. The weekly fishing report is compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. Big Spirit Lake: Bullhead – Good: Action on the Grade is still hot throw a worm on the bottom and be ready. Largemouth Bass – Good: Look for largemouth around the weeds try top water early and late in the day along with crankbaits, jigs and plastic worms. Smallmouth Bass – Good: Look for smallies on the rock piles try trowing crank baits, jerk baits, and plastics. Walleye – Fair: Fishing has been best early and late in the day with leeches being the live bait of choice. Trolling, drifting, and slip bobbers have all been proven fish catchers. Some are trolling crankbaits as well.
Five Island Lake: Walleye – Fair: Try drifting Lindy rigs and bottom bouncers during low light periods. Channel Catfish – Fair: Try drifting Lindy rigs and bottom bouncers during low light periods.
Lost Island Lake: Walleye – Fair: Drifting live bait with Lindy rigs and bottom bouncers has been producing a few fish some days are better than others.
Silver Lake: Try throwing a bottom rig for quality size bullheads around the shorelines and don’t be surprised to catch a catfish.
West Okoboji Lake: Bluegill – Slow: Fishing in the backs of the bays around the weeds can be good at times look deeper for the biggest fish. Largemouth Bass – Fair: Try fishing around the weeds in the bays topwater and soft plastics should produce. Smallmouth Bass – Slow: Look toward the rock piles for smallmouth action.
Monserrat Figueroa of Rock Valley has signed a letter of intent to continue her softball career at Northwestern next fall.
Figueroa is a 5’3” catcher who is in her third year of playing for the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley softball team. Figueroa hit .340 with two home runs and 38 RBIs last season, earning third team all-state and first team all-district and all-conference honors. She is currently hitting .443 with three home runs and 11 extra-base hits in leading her team to a 17-2 record and #6 ranking in the latest poll. Figueroa also earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore (2011) and was an honorable mention all-conference selection in basketball this past year.
She plans to major in sports marketing/media at Northwestern and is the daughter of Juan and Claudia.
“We are very excited to have Monserrat join our program,” commented head coach Chris Nachtigall. “She has proven to be a great softball player that comes from a terrific high school program. Her work ethic, leadership ability and understanding of the game will allow her to have great success at Northwestern.”
Brackets are out for district baseball. In Class 2A District 1 Sioux Center will be the host team. In the lower bracket Sheldon will open play at 5pm Saturday July 13th. The winner will meet host team Sioux Center who got a first round bye.
In the upper bracket a 7pm game has South O’Brien against Unity. The winner will meet Western who got a first round bye.
In Class 2A District 2 all games will be hosted by Spirit Lake. In the upper bracket it’s Emmetsburg against Okoboji at 7pm Saturday the 13th. The winner will meet Spirit Lake who got a first round bye.
In the lower bracket a 5pm game has Estherville Lincoln Central against Sioux Central. The winner will go against North Union who got a first round bye.
Semi final play in Class 2A will be on Tuesday July 16th.
In Class 1A District 1 the upper bracket will be hosted by West Lyon. A play in game has Trinity against Sibley Ocheyedan Saturday the 13th at 7pm. the winner will go against host team West Lyon in the quarterfinals on Tuesday the 16th. The other upper bracket quarterfinal has Central Lyon against George Little Rock.
The lower bracket is hosted by LeMars Gehlen begins with the quarterfinals on Tuesday the 16th. Hinton will meet West Sioux with Gehlen hosting Harris Lake Park.
In Class 1A District 2 the upper bracket will be hosted by Alta Aurelia. A Saturday play in game has Storm Lake St Mary’s against Newell Fonda. The winner will go against Spalding who got the bye into the quarterfinals on Tuesday July 16th. The other upper bracket quarterfinal has Alta Aurelia against Graettinger Terril Ruthven Ayrshire.
The lower bracket is hosted by Remsen St Mary’s and has St Mary’s against Laurens Marathon and Marcus Meriden Cleghorn against Remsen Union.
The semifinals in 1A will be on Thursday July 18th.
Sheldon hosted Sioux Center Wednesday night for a Siouxland Conference doubleheader. The Orabs won the softball contest 4-2 with baseball going to the Warriors on an 8-2 final.
In the softball game Sheldon took the lead for good with a three run second inning keyed by an rbi double by Tori Meendering followed by a Sami Kleinwolterink home run. Sheldon’s final run came in the sixth inning as Jessica Van Beek scored from second on a Krista Bousema double.
Sioux Center had cut the Orab lead to 3-2 as Allison Sandbulte drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as part of a 2-for-3 night at the plate.
Allie Jongewaard got the win scattering 6 hits striking out 1 and did not walk a batter. Megan Cleveringa took the loss giving up 4 earned runs on 6 hits. She walked 1 and struck out 5.
On the baseball diamond Sheldon took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Jake Rosburg walked and came in to score on an rbi single by Grant Weaver. Weaver scored on an error as Sheldon took the early lead.
Sioux Center took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. Kamden Glade and Drew Kortlever had back to back rbi singles to key the inning. The Warriors broke it open with a five run sixth inning as they took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth and that would be the final score.
Graham Zomermaand went the first 4 innings for the win. he gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5.
Ben Marshall was tagged with the loss going the first five and a third. He gave up 3 runs on 9 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4.
Up next for the Orabs will be a conference double header on Friday as they host West Lyon for senior night. the baseball game will be varsity only getting underway at 7:00. Softball will be JV and Varsity with the JV game getting underway at 5:30.
Tuesday home baseball and softball on July 2nd with Trinity Christian will now be a JV and Varsity doubleheader. That is a change from the original schedule.
