Above and Beyond?

Date posted - May 9, 2014

Yesterday I stepped into Ben Franklin to order helium balloons for a celebration. I received help from two employees, paid for my purchases and stated I’d be back at 4 to pick up my balloons. I got stopped and forgot to pick up my purchases. Imagine my surprise when the store owner tracked me down after he closed his store and asked if I still wanted them! Wow. The employees at Ben Franklin have always been helpful when I go in with odd requests or need suggestions, but this goes beyond my expectations. This is why we need to shop downtown Sheldon. Thank you is not enough. I’m not sure when I would have realized I forgot the balloons for the celebration and I do know I would have been just sick over it.

That is why I don’t want a big box store any closer than the ones we have now. If I need something from a big box store, I’d rather have to drive. (I seldom need anything from a big box store, ever).

In Chadron Nebraska, they had a Walmart Supercenter open and the prices were wonderful, lots of parking, hired a lot of people (but only for one or two days a week, not a full time job), people were so excited about having a Walmart. Pretty soon the downtown stores began to close, because they could not compete with the big box store on the highway. So the downtown died, true story As soon as the last downtown store died, Walmart raised their prices across the board 17% immediately! Now the prices were the same as what things cost downtown, when it was open and thriving. The downtown area of Chadron NE is still dead and dying. Walmart is thriving, but everybody working at Walmart has a part time job, because they don’t hire for 40 hours a week. So I am glad we have a downtown group of stores, I hope they thrive forever. I would rather pay more for sales in the downtown area, instead of going out of town to a big box store.

      …Hobby Lobby.

What does “Hobby Lobby” have to do with anything? And why did the “moderator” deny my post asking why? Maybe “Hobby Lobby” advertisement should have been denied first.

      • Robert says:

It has been confirmed that Hobby Lobby is coming to Spencer on the west end of the Southgate Mall in the location where Woolco was when the mall opened back in 1980.

I know the owner of the Ben Franklin and even though I still recommend Oleson’s Mercantile its tough to beat the selection, service and hospitality of Phil & Co.
