Bill Van Rennes was police chief of Sheldon for 19 years, perhaps a record! Wouldn’t it be fitting to establish a memorial in his name or perhaps a fitting citation in his honor, please do the right thing!

Editor’s Note: Former Sheldon Police Chief Bill Van Rennes passed away on Sunday. His obituary is on

Bill was the most polite and courteous Police Officer that ever invited me to have a seat in a squad car.

When I posted this it was my hope that someone who lives in Sheldon would present this to the city council. Thank you,Doug White (former Sheldon resident.)

I agree with Doug that it would be fitting for some sort of remembrance, citation or memorial in Bill’s honor. He was a very nice guy and did lots for the city in serving as Chief of Police. His brother, Richard, was honored for the work he has done for the museum in Riverside, CA, The Sheldon Historical Society honored him as well March AFB in Riverside, CA did. Quite a family.

  4. Ron Davison says:

I knew Bill since 1961 when he started his service with Sheldon at City Park. A mutual interest in cars had kept us acquainted for nearly 50 years. A trip back to Sheldon from Colorado or California always had an hour or two spent with Bill chatting about old cars, something I looked forward to each trip. I hadn’t seen much of Bill the past several years and that is my misfortune. I always admired Bill and had the utmost respect for him. A terrific guy and it was a real honor to have known him over the past decades.

  5. HAPPY says:

Bill served our community well! We will always remember him as one of the nicest people we loved.

  6. David says:

Bill was a good man and lead by example he cared about people which made him a good police chief.

  7. Marv Borgman says:

I met Bill in the late 50s when working with the Drivers License Division of the Iowa Highway Patrol. Our Sheldon HQ was at the City Hall, and we’d see Bill most every working day – especially so in the early 60s when he joined the Police Department. I left Sheldon in 1962 to join the Air Force, but would always make a point of dropping by and chatting when home on leave. Bill was an exceptional individual, able to relate to and get on with Sheldon youth while helping them, when necessary, to redirect their energy in positive directions more in keeping with their wellbeing and that of the community at large. He also provided the Department the leadership necessary to ensure a safe community environment to one and all. I agree with others who have posted – his record of service to the Sheldon community is worth of fitting recognition.
