Clear Sidewalks

Date posted - January 24, 2013

On my way to work this AM I counted 6 sidewalks that have not been cleared.

Don’t we have an ordinance on this to be done in a 24hr period or get fined for it??

Also, Christmas is over take down your lights OR at least turn them OFF!!

Thanks J

You’re complaining about Christmas lights? Really? I didn’t know there was a rule that people can’t have lights up and on after the holidays. Sounds to me like you need to get a life.

Wow is right!!! That is all you have to do is complain about Christmas lights. Why dont you just drive to work and quit worrying about why lights are on. Maybe they are celebrating another Holiday??? It’s a Free Country Right???

    • Ebeneezer S. says:

I agree with J, turn off the xmas lights…

    • Jay says:

The “rule” is turn Christmas lights off when Christmas is over. In some religions, that is at Epiphany (Jan. 6th). If you still have your lights on now, they are just Winter Holiday lights.

Do you know if anyone is living in those houses ? Are they Elderly people who are waiting for someone to come do it? Are they on vacation? Are they sick with the flu? Are they in the hospital? I could say many many more things on that subject ~
As for the lights …….WOW !! Did someone hire Mr Grinch to drive around and check for lights ? There is no law to say that you can not have them up and on after Christmas and there is no wording on those packages that say they are just for Christmas. I use red ones for Valentines Day, I use multi color ones for Easter, I use red clear and blue for the 4th of July, I use orange ones for Halloween and I have clear ones in my flower garden. Why because “I LIKE them” :o)

Really? I know my walks were done, then windy late sunday night and now kids did them – not the best but there ok. Maybe that was the case with these people. Lights – really? My bushes are still lite. I did manage to get them off the gutter when the weather was warmer last week.

I have to say “thank you” to the guy that snowblows from one end of my street to the other . He does it every time it snows. and I don’t know who it is.

I have a company that clears my driveway. So I have to wait until they get to me after a snow. But my sidewalk always looks good.

I agree, maybe they are elderly or sick and cannot get out to clean the sidewalk. My next door neighbor was in the hospital all last winter. So it does happen.

  5. Just lazy says:

I still have my lights up.
They are clear, they are pretty. I work full time, I go to night classes. I have 3 kids. They haven’t been my priority. Plus, on my days off work. I volunteer. Needless to say, they are still up and I don’t really care. I like them. They are pretty.

Somebody- (the one who created this dumb thread) needs to get a life. Worry about yourself. I’m sure you are not a perfect person.

  7. chris says:

Well if you guys think that the elderly are sick and cant take them down how did they put them up then and why did they?

  8. Kenny says:

What if Christmas isn’t over? My family celebrates late every year so kids can be with spouses families on Christmas Day we pick a time in January. We even celebrated in February the year my Dad died on Christmas Day. Lights will stay up – and on – if we feel like it. Thankfully , the REASON for the season stays lite all year!

  9. JP says:

First part is @ Chris ~ Maybe they had help putting them up and no one has gotten around to helping them take them down ~ As for why did they…….. you ask? Maybe……… just maybe……..THEY LIKE THEM ~ IT MAKES THEM FEEL GOOD ~ Just because your older does not mean you cant have them up and enjoy them.

Try taking away my HOLIDAY lights and I am going to be very cranky ~ Just ask my husband LOL :o) Something as simple as Holiday lights can make a person feel good and is a pretty easy, inexpensive thing to enjoy ~ When someone else starts to pay my electric bill then you can come shut the darn things off !! Until then you have the choice to complain about it, drive another way to work or simply just don’t look at them and pay attention to the road ~ After all…….The streets are snowy and icy out there ~

I feel this person was more concerned about the sidewalk “rule” check the title, I do agree if the town is going to pursue the clearing of sidewalks they should do it. And the lites, I feel we celebrate Christmas in Dec. so if you can’t take them down, turn them off, so we can look forward to them again in Dec. Cath

  11. JP says:

Cathy ~ Yes that is what started this conversation ~ My original comment I thought stated this and so did a others ~ Sidewalks have not been cleared ~ There could be a good reason ~ Several Reasons ~ Do people think of the reasons why ???? NOOOOOOOOOOO ~ There are to quick to point fingers and lay blame ~ As for Lights ~ People celebrate Christmas yes in December but others celebrate it when it is convenient for them and their family’s. Their are so many reasons why the sidewalks are not cleared and why the light are not down ~ Who are we do decide what is right and what is wrong for these situations ? When you are in their shoes ……..walk and see how it is and how far it may get you ~ Someday we may all be in need and then who will you ask for help ?
P.S. My Disabled Grandson is the reason why I have light on 365 days of the year 24 hours a day and 7 days a week ~ WHY ? Because he says ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh gramma ………..pretty !!!

  12. Lee Ann says:

And to be neighborly, someone living near these unshoveled sidewalks could take about two minutes, to put the snow shovel down and run it through their sidewalk snow down one time, and back up one time. Then you would have done your good deed for the day. The amount of snow we’ve had would mean an extra minute of your time.

My next door neighbor was having back problems last year. And I scooped it one time down and back and her sidewalk looked great.

  13. biker says:

So are most walks cleared now?? Oh thats right there are still side walks that need to be put in place! So before enforcing this rule why not get sidewalks enforced! I still dont know why the guy across from the middle school doesn’t need to put in walks or the school on the other side of E.6th street by the ballfields. Empty lot onwers I can see but still. So we need to have a starting point to enforce things and then follow through with others, but we can’t do one without the other.
