Fireworks APPROVED For Labor Day Weekend

Sheldon, Iowa — There will be some special events in Sheldon for the Labor Day weekend even though both Risefest and Celebration Days have been postponed until next year.

At Wednesday’s city council meeting it was decided that the City and SCDC would sponsor a fireworks display Sunday evening, September 6th, with a rain date of Labor Day, September 7th. The fireworks will be located just southeast of the LLRC at Northwest Iowa Community College. Parking will be available on the college parking lots for the event.

The council also approved the request from the Northwest Iowa Tractor Pullers to use the area near the Sheldon Tree Dump on Monroe Avenue for a two-day tractor pulling event on September 5th and 6th. Brian Woelber, representing the association told the council that Sheldon has become the “hot spot” for tractor pulling, and with 40 to 50 tractors participating in the two-day event it will help the economy of Sheldon.

In other business, the council approved the lot purchase for the Thorman Sewer Lift Station and the engineering agreement for that lift station and the NCC lift station. City Manager Sam Kooiker reminded the council and public about the pickup days coming in September. He said since there will not be actual flags used this year to identify pickup locations, it will be important for people to have their house numbers properly in place. Public Works Director Todd Uhl talked about the chip sealing of some city streets. He explained that after the material on the streets has been driven over for about 30 days they will sweep up any material that is still loose on the surface.
