Give out free food and drink to people that never come to their business any other day. Why not? Something for nothing……….Its not free to everyone…….someone pays for it……Maybe we can get government help……..

    • Sal says:

There’s no need to be so rude. That’s exactly what’s wrong with the world…no respect for others. I shop the Sheldon businesses and hope they do it again also. Always have a great time!

    • TM says:

Why not move it to celabration days
Have it the Friday night or so
We alwasys did shopping that night

  2. SJ says:

Maybe the businesses should just give out a voucher for a free hot dog when you make a purchase at their stores. They could even set a minimum dollar amount that you must spend. For those that don’t want to buy anything, they could just put a price on the hotdog to cover the businesses cost. Problem solved.

  3. Billy Bob says:

Maybe the downtown businesses can’t afford the hot dogs after getting assessed with street updates and flower pots.

    Never answered my question.

    is there or not?

I will again apologize, from the reasonable residents of Sheldon, for you being attacked for a simple question on this forum, just as I did to the person who asked a simple question about the school start date. You did not do anything wrong.

I would hope that KIWA would look at this forum as a whole, and rethink it completely. This is not a place for constructive nor positive discussions. It looks poorly on Sheldon and on KIWA.

I would suggest a call to Sheldon Chamber and Development at 712-324-2813 to ask your question and receive an appropriate answer.

I did a little research and Hot Dog Days are scheduled for August 12th.

  7. JW says:

So does anyone know if hot dog days is go or no? Who ultimately makes this decision?

  8. Harriet Oleson says:

Back in Walnut Grove – Oleson’s Mercantile, Lar’s Lumber Store, Doc Baker and several other businesses provided a complimentary lutefisk and lefse feed every summer for the Scandinavian folks that patronized their businesses. This went on for years until “those people” from the Edgerton/Ellsworth area and Sioux County, Iowa started showing up and ate double portions like they deserved it….. That ruined it for everyone and to top it all – word had it that those people did their shopping at chain stores in Orange City and Sioux Center – oh the nerve.

  9. Agreed says:

I with you jm, is there or not?? Someone who reads this forum knows and maybe could share the answer although I would tend to agree with Billy Bob.

“National Hot Dog day” just happened to fall on the same day as Sheldon’s Crazy Days this year, July 23. Hindsight is always 20/20, but its too bad we didn’t plan for that and combine the two events this year. The downtown businesses might have benefited from the extra traffic generated from those just looking for a freebie.

  11. Free Man says:

Great news everyone! Hot dogs and buns are on sale at HyVee this week.

Now you can have all you want in the comfort of your own home without fighting the out of town crowds or feeling awkward asking the town merchants if you can use their facilities as you stand there with empty hands.

I grew up in a different state. And when I heard about hot dog days, I thought it was the most illogical idea I’d heard in a long time. sure it brings some people into your store, but its mostly little kids that have no intention of buying anything.

What would make more sense is a coupon for 2.00 off of a 10.00 (or 5.00) sale. Buying something for 3.00 instead of 5.00 would bring a lot of at least smaller sales. Or a dollar off, whatever one figures the hot dog, bun and condiments costs. Put it together with school shopping or crazy days, when there are lots of people around.

    • MamaB says:

Huge waste of time and money by businesses for kids that never spend money in their store………trick or treating. Ridiculous.
