Cattlemen/Women Optimistic, Despite Challenging 2019

(IARN) — United States cattle producers met this week in San Antonio for the Cattle Industry Convention and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Trade Show.

Jennifer Houston, president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, reflects on 2019 and shares her hopes for 2020.

Two-thousand-and-nineteen brought its share of challenges to United States cattle producers. Cattlemen and women faced market disruptions, fueled by fire, trade and weather.

“We had market disruption after the Tyson fire. That’s on people’s minds, if we are not at the top of the market. We’re going to work through that; the numbers are going to have to work through,” Houston said.

Cattle producers choose to remain optimistic, despite the challenges of years past, according to Houston.

“There are a lot of reasons (as to why) I think it’s a good time to be in the cattle industry. I’m also hearing that the guys are gearing up for it,” Houston said. “Cattlemen are feeling better. We had a tough year last year, but I think these trade deals have given them a reason to be optimistic.”

Through it all, cattle producers continued to provide United States consumers with high-quality, sustainable beef products.

“There’s more that unites us than divides us. We have different resources (and) we use them in different ways. But we end up with the same high-quality product,” Houston said.
