Hawarden, Iowa — Two Hawarden men were jailed in connection with a string of burglaries in and around Hawarden Tuesday. Hawarden Police identify the pair as 18-year old Kyle James Bottorf and 22-year old Roy Lee McDermott, both of Hawarden.
According to Hawarden Police, Tuesday, at approximately 3:20 a.m., an Officer of the Hawarden Police Department was checking businesses when he came across a burglary in progress at a business in the outlying Hawarden area. Assistance from additional officers of the Hawarden Police Department and Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, including their K-9, were called. Police say they discovered that someone had broken a window and entered an office building, but were able to get out of the building before additional officers arrived on the scene.
Using evidence left at the scene officers say they were able to track down Bottorff and McDermott at their respective apartments in Hawarden. Further investigation found that Bottorff was allegedly involved in two additional burglaries in Hawarden earlier in the night, while McDermott was allegedly involved in one of the burglaries in Hawarden with Bottorff, and that Bottorff was allegedly involved in two previous burglaries in and around Hawarden.
According to authorities, Bottorff was charged by Hawarden Police with 3 counts of Burglary in the 3rd degree, 2 counts of Theft in the 2nd Degree, 1 count of Theft in the 4th Degree, and Possession of Marijuana. Additionally the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office charged Bottorff with 2 counts of Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Possession of Stolen Property, Theft in the 2nd Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 4th/5th degree. Bottorff was reportedly taken to the Sioux County Jail on an $11,000.00 bond.
Police say McDermott was charged by the Hawarden Police Department with Burglary in the 3rd degree, Theft in the 2nd Degree, and Possession of Marijuana.
