SUMMARY:Art Exhibit at Northwestern College
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern College is opening its 2024–25 art exhibit season with a show by South Dakota artist Molly Wicks. \nTitled “Phases for Now\,” Wicks’ exhibit is on display through Oct. 17\, with a public reception with the artist scheduled for Thursday\, Sept. 26\, at 5 p.m. \nWicks’ artwork features suspended plexiglass\, metal and canvas on which she has cut out or painted organic shapes inspired by sedimentary layers\, fungus and mold forms. The paint and cutouts create refractions and shadows\, and her use of vibrant colors produce both tension and harmony. \nThe media she employs include oil paint on board\, acrylic paint on canvas\, nail polish on plexiglass\, and copper cutouts. \nWicks is a graduate of the University of Minnesota who earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing\, sculpture and painting from Washington State University. She has taught in the Minneapolis Public School District\, at Washington State University\, and for South Dakota State University (SDSU). \nLarge projects by Wick are in the permanent collection of Johns Hopkins University and SDSU. Her artwork has also been exhibited in Florida\, Idaho\, North Dakota\, Ohio\, Oregon\, Texas and Washington. She has also held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and at the Art Farm in Marquette\, Nebraska. \nNorthwestern’s Te Paske Gallery is located in the Korver Visual Arts Center\, on Highway 10 at 214 8th Street SW in Orange City. Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

SUMMARY:The Perfect Dog Performance at Northwestern College
DESCRIPTION:Northwestern College’s theatre department will present “The Perfect Dog” children’s play Friday evening and Saturday afternoon\, Oct. 4 and 5. Both performances—at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday—will take place in the DeWitt Theatre Art Center’s Allen Black Box Theatre. \nBased on the book by John O’Hurley\, “The Perfect Dog” tells the story of Sam\, a 12-year-old perfectionist\, and her search for a flawless dog to enter in the town’s dog contest. Unable to find a canine that measures up\, she resorts to training the family dog\, Max\, who is less than eager to obey commands. In the end\, Sam and Max learn there is no such thing as perfect\, but there is such a thing as being perfect for each other. \nDrew Schmidt\, the play’s director and an associate professor of theatre at Northwestern\, chose “The Perfect Dog” because it is a musical and because of its message. \nHalf of the cast play human characters and half play various breeds of dogs\, ranging from a German shepherd to a Parisian poodle. \nSix members of the cast are first-year students—unsurprising since Schmidt says children’s plays are a great “on ramp” for younger students participating in their first college production. Of the 10 members of the cast\, five play humans and five play dogs. \nAnna Frangenberg is Sam Brown; Liam Nibbelink and Lilia Twaddle play her parents; Lexi Squier plays Sam’s friend\, Charlie; and Maelee Rodenburg fills several other roles. \nZeke Stansbery is Sam’s dog\, Max\, while the other dogs—Diesel\, Cyclone\, Klause and Carla—are played by Cloee Reding\, Juleah Brinks\, Lauren Kalstrup and Elli Zerr. \nIn addition to the two public performances on Oct. 4 and 5\, the cast is doing 13 school performances that will be attended by approximately 4\,000 area children. This year\, spots were reserved for kids from flood-impacted schools in Rock Valley and Spencer\, in addition to reservations for Orange City students. The rest of the school performances filled up the day invitations to schools were sent out. One of the performances is reserved for homeschool students. \nAdmission for the public performances of “The Perfect Dog” is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children 12 and under are admitted free. To purchase tickets\, visit nwciowa.edu/tickets\, call the box office at 712-707-7098\, or email boxoffice@nwciowa.edu.

SUMMARY:Northwestern College Fall Music Showcase
DESCRIPTION:As part of Raider Nation Celebration\, the Northwestern College music department will present a fall music showcase on Saturday\, Oct. 5th\, at 7 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The showcase will feature music from the A cappella Choir\, Heritage Singers\, Women’s Choir\, Orchestra and Symphonic Band\, and is free and open to the public. \nThe A cappella Choir will perform four selections ranging from the evocative plea for mercy “Kyrie” to “Baba Yetu\,” a highly rhythmic Swahili setting of “The Lord’s Prayer.” A highlight of the Heritage Singers’ repertoire is “Flight of the Bumblebee\,” an arrangement of Rimsky-Korsokov’s famous orchestra composition; without words\, the music portrays an active and annoying bumblebee. These two choirs will invite guest conductor Corky Koerselman to join director Dr. Holm on stage. \nThe Women’s Choir will be singing Ryan Main’s striking “Il Lampo\,” with text that portrays flashes of lightning in a building storm\, and the deeply moving “In Remembrance” from Eleanor Daley’s Requiem. \nThe Symphonic Band will open with Charles Booker’s first movement of Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble\, “Radiant Blues.” They will share another work titled “No Shadow of Turning” by David Gillingham\, which is inspired by the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” The String Orchestra will offer a couple of pieces\, including Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Presto” from the first movement of his Symphony No. 1. \nOther highlights include performances by sophomore Morgan Huls (soprano)\, winner of the Rowenhorst Vocal Scholarship\, and junior Benjamin Geary (saxophone)\, winner of the Ritsema Instrumental Scholarship. Cindy Moeller\, NWC voice faculty\, will present a vocal solo. MaryLou Wielenga\, college organist\, will open the evening with an extended prelude on the chapel organ.
