SUMMARY:Community Blood Bank Blood Drive at Central Lyon
DESCRIPTION:Central Lyon High School and Community Blood Bank are joining forces to help ward off winter blood shortages by hosting a blood drive event.  The blood drive will be held on Wednesday\, January 16 from 7:30 am to 11:00 am and 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Central Lyon High School.  All blood donations will stay local for local use.      \nEvery three seconds someone needs blood\, and the only way to ensure that those needs are met is to rely on volunteer donors to donate blood. The need for local blood donors is immense.  The Community Blood Bank supplies over 550 units of blood each week to people in the region.  Among those who benefit from donated blood are trauma and burn victims\, cancer patients and persons undergoing surgery. \n“The winter months can be a difficult time to maintain an adequate blood supply for the community\,” states Ken Versteeg\, Executive Director\, Community Blood Bank.  “With the cold and flu season upon us\, less people are eligible to give blood.  This fact coupled with an increase in travel accidents creates a high need for blood products\, data shows a steady increase in usage as we go through the winter season.” \nDonors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form)\, weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health.  It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood.  Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.  For more information log onto www.cbblifeblood.org\, call Community Blood Bank at 1-877-877-3070 or call Central Lyon High School at 712-472-2664\, walk-ins welcome. \nCommunity Blood Bank is not affiliated with other blood bank organizations and takes pride in being a self-sufficient organization\, thanks to the generosity of our local blood donors.

SUMMARY:Sheldon Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:The Sheldon St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus are hosting their Annual Spelling bee at St. Patrick’s School on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019 at 10:00 am.    \nRegistration forms can be obtained at Sheldon Public\, Catholic\, or Christian Schools prior to the day of the event. Pre-registration will also take place on that morning at 9:30 am. At that time participants will be checked in\, assigned a contestant number\, and directed to a competition room. There will be four different age categories—grades 4-7. Participants will be competing against students from Sheldon area schools. Sheldon area schools will have copies of the spelling lists for each grade\, which they will distribute to those students interested in participating. \nThe competition for each grade level can last from 30 minutes to an hour. As each speller is eliminated\, we do ask that contestant and audience member remain in the competition room until the winner has been decided. Medals and certificates will be handed out as each age level finishes its competition. Those participating will also have an opportunity to win other prizes. \nThe top two finishers will also move on to the regional competition which will be held on Sunday\, February 24\, 2019 at 1:00 pm. SUMMARY:Sheldon Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Sheldon Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a Free Throw Contest on Sunday\, January 27\, 2019\, at 1:00 pm.   \nThe contest will take place at the Village Northwest Unlimited Gymnasium (in the Wansink Center).  Doors will open at 12:00 pm for registration and practice shooting.  Boys and girls who are 9-14 by January 1\, 2019\, are eligible to participate.  Those participating may register at the door. \nEach participant will get 3 warm-up shots\, followed by shooting 15 free throws during the competition.  Boys and girls\, ages 9\, 10 and 11\, will shoot with a women’s regulation size basketball from a foul line 12-foot away from a 10-foot high basket.  Girls\, ages 12\, 13\, and 14\, will shoot with a women’s regulation size basketball from a foul line 15-foot away from a 10-foot high basket.  Boys\, ages 12\, 13\, and 14\, will shoot with a men’s regulation size basketball from a foul line 15-foot away from a 10-foot high basket. \nFirst\, second\, and third place medals will be awarded for boys and girls in each age division for those individuals who make the most free throws out of the 15 shots.  In addition\, those participating will also have an opportunity to win other prizes.  Those finishing first and second in their respective divisions will advance to the district level of competition\, which we be held on Sunday\, February17\, 2019\, at 1:00 pm.  The contest will take place at the Village Northwest Unlimited Gymnasium (in the Wansink Center).  Doors will open at 12:00 pm for registration and practice shooting. \nIf you have questions\, contact Ron Jansen (348-0841) or Jim Gude (324-2385) We hope to see you there!
