SUMMARY:VNU 14th Annual Run\, Walk & Roll
DESCRIPTION:Village Northwest Unlimited will be hosting the 14th annual benefit Run\, Walk & Roll event on Saturday\, June 1st\, 2019 at 9:00 am. Races will include a 5K run\, 10K run and a 1-mile walk/roll. \nPre-registration is strongly encouraged before May 17\, 2019 to guarantee a shirt before the race. \nPacket Pick-Up for 5K & 10K races: Packets with bibs\, t-shirts\, chips and maps should be picked up in the Wansink Center on the grounds of Village Northwest from 4:00pm to 5:30pm on Friday\, May 31. Please make every attempt to get your packet on Friday because there will be limited time available for packet pick-up on Saturday morning. Packet pickup on Saturday will be from 7:30am to 8:30am. \nThe 1-mile walk will be wheelchair accessible enabling those who are unable to walk to “roll” their wheelchair. Those doing the 1-mile walk/roll will not need to do packet pick-up on Friday or Saturday  but should check in and pick up their t-shirt on Saturday morning anytime between 7:30 – 8:30am. \nAll events will be run on a well-marked\, hard surfaced\, flat to gently rolling course\, utilizing the Sheldon Recreational Trails\, the Village drive\, and Sheldon city streets. Traffic will be controlled and aide stations will be located on the course. \nOverall male and female winners in the 5K and 10K run will receive a trophy. Top 3 male and top 3 female finishers in each age group will receive a medal. \nCollecting sponsorship pledges for this event are optional. Money raised will be used to improve services and quality of life for individuals with disabilities that are served at Village Northwest Unlimited. \nRegistration fees are as follows:  \n$25 through Friday\, May 10th \n$30 from Saturday\, May 11th through Friday\, May 24th \n$35 from Saturday\, May 25th until 8:00 am on Saturday\, June 1st \nRegister by clicking on the link below: \nhttps://www.villagenorthwest.org/events/rwr \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The O’Brien County Conservation Board is hosting a guest speaker presenting information on the “Big Cats of Iowa.”  Mountain lions and bobcats are in the news.  This will be an opportunity for you to learn about these large cats that can sometimes be spotted in our region. \nDr. William Clark\, Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Ecology at Iowa State University\, will be presenting at the Prairie Heritage Center\, 4931 Yellow Ave\, Peterson Iowa on Tuesday\, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. \nThe talk will begin with a brief overview of the history of cats in North America including the saber tooth cats and cheetahs that once roamed our continent.  The presentation then transitions to the modern cat species including endangered species like ocelots and common species like bobcats.  Mountain lions that occasionally show up in Iowa will also be featured along with a discussion of conservation challenges such as habitat loss\, conflicts and hunting. \nThe presentation includes many great photographs as well as hands on items such as skins and skulls.  Make plans to attend! \nFor more information\, contact the Prairie Heritage Center at 712-295-7200.

DESCRIPTION:SCDC\, KIWA Radio\, and Community Blood Bank will host their “All American” blood drive on Monday\, June 24th from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Sheldon’s Community Services Building. \nAll blood types are in immediate need.  All who donate will receive a free lunch and an ALL AMERICAN BLOOD DONOR t-shirt. \n“Community support is vital to the local blood supply. It is important to know that the blood that is donated with Community Blood Bank is from your friends and neighbors in this region\,” states Ken Versteeg\, Executive Director\, Community Blood Bank.  “We are grateful for the opportunity to serve Sheldon area patients and encourage the community to help us by donating on the bloodmobile when it visits Sheldon.” \nSanford Sheldon Medical Center blood needs are supplied by Community Blood Bank. Community Blood Bank has been the sole provider of blood and blood product for Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for over 17 years. \nDonors must be at least 17 years of age (16 years old with signed parent consent form)\, weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health the day of the blood drive.  Please bring a form of I.D. with you.  To schedule an appointment or for more information\, call the Sheldon Chamber at 324-2813.  Walk-ins are welcome!
