DESCRIPTION:The O’Brien County Conservation Board is offering a multitude of opportunities for youth to get outdoors and EXPLORE this summer. \nA survival camp for beginners will be held on Thursday\, August 1st at the Prairie Heritage Center.  Youths ages 8-14 will meet at the Prairie Heritage Center at 9:00 a.m.  Some basic survival skills – such as compasses\, plant identification\, track identification\, fire starting and more – will be covered.  After learning some basics\, participants will engage in a friendly competition to see if they could survive in these “Minute-to-Win-It” style challenges.  The program will conclude at noon. \nPre-registration is requested for this event.  Contact the O’Brien County Conservation Board at 712-295-7200.

DESCRIPTION:The Glee Handbell Choir from Tokyo\, Japan\, will offer a free concert in Orange City on Thursday\, Aug. 1st. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in Northwestern College’s Christ Chapel. \nThe Glee Handbell Choir was established in 1980. The choir has toured since 1981\, performing several times in Orange City. This is the 48th year of the  High School’s  exchange program\, and graduating seniors from the Tokyo high school have visited Northwestern for a three-week winter English program since 2012. \nThe bell choir’s 90-minute program will include a variety of pieces including “Joyful\, Joyful\,” some Glenn Miller classics\, “Waltz of the Flowers” from “The Nutcracker” and the “Star Wars” theme by John Williams.

The Prairie Heritage Center is holding a special event to celebrate spending time outdoors.  Consider a morning run or walk on the prairie as a way to support the center’s programming and display development.  This year’s Bison Stampede Trail Run will raise money for an observation tower which will provide an excellent way to look at the bison\, watch migrating birds\, and enjoy the view of the valley. \nThis running or walking event will be held on the trails adjacent to the Prairie Heritage Center.  The course covers 5K (3.1 miles) over a cross country style course.  The race will be held on Saturday\, August 10th at 7:30 a.m. Race day registrations will be taken from 6:30 – 7:15 a.m. \nVisit www.prairieheritagecenter.org or call the Prairie Heritage Center at 712-295-7200 to get race information and to register.

SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the best known meteor showers in the Northern Hemisphere.  It will soon be time again for this annual event.  The earth’s orbit is crossing into the debris path of the Swift-Tuttle comet which last passed through the inner solar system over 20 years ago.  The shower gradually builds to a peak of about 60 meteors an hour. \nAlthough the best time to view this magnificent event is just before dawn\, the O’Brien County Conservation Board will be hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower party on Tuesday\, August 13 beginning at 8:00 p.m.  Come to the Prairie Heritage Center to learn more about meteors and summer constellations. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend some time enjoying the summer night sky.  Enjoy the sunset on the prairie\, check out the stars as they begin to come out and stay for the meteor show. \nFor more information\, contact the Conservation Board at 712-295-7200.
