SUMMARY:Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee
DESCRIPTION:The Sheldon St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus are hosting their Annual Spelling bee to be held at the Wansink Center on the campus of Village Northwest Unlimited on Saturday\, February 1\, 2020 at 9:30 am. \nRegistration forms can be obtained at Sheldon Public\, Catholic\, or Christian Schools prior to the day of the event.  Pre-registration will also take place on that morning at 9:00 am. At that time participants will be checked in\, assigned a contestant number\, and directed to a competition room. \nThere will be four different age categories—grades 4-7. Participants will be competing against students from Sheldon area schools. Sheldon area schools will have copies of the spelling lists for each grade\, which they will distribute to those students interested in participating. \nThe competition for each grade level will last approximately 30 minutes or less. As each speller is eliminated\, we do ask that contestants and audience members remain in the competition room until the winner has been decided. \nMedals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category\, and all participants will receive a certificate for participation. Medals and certificates will be handed out as each age level finishes its competition. Participants will also have an opportunity to win other prizes. Those finishing  first or second will have an opportunity to participate in the regional level of competition. \nFor more information\, contact Jim Gude (324-2385).

SUMMARY:Trials and Triumphs Program
DESCRIPTION:The O’Brien County Conservation Board is pleased to partner with local libraries for another year of the Conservation Series.  The topic for February is a look at “Trials and Triumphs” in our natural world. \nWhat happened to birds so great in numbers that they darkened the sky?  Where are the clams that once covered the bottoms of ours streams?  Would you believe that you can find them at the end of a fly fishing rod and in the middle of your coat? \nThis library program features some stories of destruction of our natural resources but will end on a high note of encouragement for the future.  It features literary works such as “She is Wearing a Dead Bird on Her Head” by Kathryn Lasky\, “The Feather Thief” by Kirk Wallace Johnson and “From the Bottom Up” By Chad Pregracke as well as other titles.  There will also be a stunning collection of confiscated items from wildlife animal trade on display. \nJoin the O’Brien County Naturalist at the Sheldon Public Library on Monday\, February 3 at 2:00 p.m.  This interactive program will last approximately 45 minutes and is suitable for people of all ages.

SUMMARY:Community Blood Bank Blood Drive in Sheldon
DESCRIPTION:Community Blood Bank will partner up to save lives at a winter community blood drive event held on Tuesday\, February 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. at Village Northwest Unlimited and from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center.  The public will have an opportunity to donate blood to help local patients in the hospital during the fall months.  All blood donations will go directly to saving patients’ lives in the Sheldon area.  All who donate will receive a free t-shirt. \n“Donating blood is important in all season as they are all met with their own challenges.  The winter is a struggle to maintain an adequate blood supply as we face issues with donors unable to give due to cold or flu\,” states Ken Versteeg\, Executive Director\, Community Blood Bank.  “We have been seeing a steady reduction of 18% in local donations as the cold and flu season is intensifying across the region.  This makes it all the more important for those feeling well and healthy to ensure they give local and support the local supplies on February 4th.” \n Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org)\, weigh 110 lbs. or more and be in good general health the day of the donation.  Please bring an I.D.  It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating.  You can safely donate blood every 56 days. \nFor more information log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call 712-324-6360. Community Blood Bank is not associated with any other blood bank organizations.
