SUMMARY:The BIG (Build Innovate and Grow) Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The economic development organizations in northwest Iowaare teamming up to offer $10\,000 in prize money for The BIG Challenge grant competition. \nThe BIG Challenge encourages entreprenuers to Build\, Innovate and Grow their business in northwest Iowa. The contest gives entreprenuers and small business owners the opportunity to submit their dreams to start\, or expand a business and then encourage friends\, family and customers to vote for them online. The finalists will present their idea to an audience and judges in a pitch-off event for a chance to win thousands in cash prizes. \nFrom now until September 28th\, entreprenuers in Lyon\, Monoa\, O’Brien\, Osceola\, Plymoth\, Sioux and Woodbury Counties can visit www.iawestcoast.com and click on “The BIG Challenge” to submit their business\, or startup ideas. \nVoting on the submitted ideas will take place on October 1st through October 10th. During the voting period\, the entreprenuer will recruit others to vote for their entry online. The top three  vote-getters will advance to a regional pitch-off competition\, along with two additional entrants chosen by a selection committee. Each finalist will receive personalized coaching from the University of Northern Iowa’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. \nThe regional contest will be helo the evening of Thursday\, November 20th\, in Le Mars at the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor (115 Central Ave. NW). That evening the finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their ideas with first place receiving $5\,000\, second place receiving $3\,000 and third place receiving $2\,000 to grow their business.

Vendors show in the park along with Food Vendors. Celebration Day Parade starting a 2 pm and Laser tag and inflatables in the park to follow. All this going at at The Sheldon Celebration Days Event.

You can join Oak Grove and the Prairie Woods Nature Center for one part\, or both. \nPart 1: The program will start indoors with Monarchs and their anatomy\, their migration pattern and why scientists are studying them. \nPart 2: Weather and conditions permitting\, you will hike the park roads\, gardens and trails to see if you can assist the scientists in tagging monarchs. You will learn how to tag them and Oak Grove Park will provide the nets. Part 2 will be cancelled if it is raining. \nThere is no cost for the event\, but there are a limited number of nets for use. If you have your own net\, please bring it along. This event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

DESCRIPTION:Sioux County Conservation has the pleasure to host a unique program Saturday\, September 6th\, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. with returning presenter Michael Wanbdi Gdeska (Spotted Eagle). In this presentation\, Michael will connect the natural history of the Great Plains with cultural practices of Native Americans in this region. \n\n\nMichael\, a member of the Ihanktonwan Oyate (Yankton Sioux) tribe\, will share his experience from a Native American perspective in developing a spirtual relationship with all of creation. It will include the sacred ceremony of Azilya (smudging) He will use members of their plant nations and drumming songs during the ceremony. A light snack and Lakota message will be shared. \n\n\nMichael’s paintings and artwork will be featured. \n\n\nDue to a sponsorship by Sioux County Conservation Foundation\, cost is only $10 per person.

SUMMARY:Water main flushing in the City of Sheldon
DESCRIPTION:The Sheldon Water Department will be performing routine flushing of the water mains in your area on September 10th and September 11th between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. \nThis essential maintenance is necessary to: clear the mains of built-up mineral deposits and sediment\, ensure the proper operation of fire hydrants for public safety and help maintain overall water quality throughout the system. \nDuring the flushing period\, you may experience temporary discolored water. This is caused by the mineral sediment being stirred up in the water mains. It is harmless\, but may stain laundry. You will also experience a slight drop in water pressure. This is normal and temporary. You may also see utility workers operating fire hydrants in your neighborhood. \nTo minimize any inconvenience\, the City of Sheldon recommends the following: before the flushing begins if you need to do laundry\, finish it before the scheduled time. During the flushing: Avoid using hot water and minimize your overall water use\, especially for laundry. \nAfter the flushing is complete run the cold water tap nearest to your water meter (typically in a basement utility sink\, or an outside spigot) for several minutes until it runs clear. If your water still appears discolored\, wait 15 to 30 minutes for the sediment to settle and then flush the cold water again. Once the cold water is clear\, you can flush your hot water heater by running the hot water taps until the water runs clear. The City of Sheldon apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and cooperation as they perform this vital work.
