Fire Nearly Destroys Sanborn Home

Sanborn, Iowa — A house was damaged and may have been totaled in a fire on Monday, October 28, 2024, in Sanborn.

According to Sanborn Fire Chief Randy Lyman, at about 2:30 p.m., the Sanborn Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire near the corner of Walker Street and Western Avenue in western Sanborn.

The chief says the fire department saw the whole south side of the house on fire as they approached the scene. He says the wind blew the fire through the house. He says it is believed that the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials. According to Chief Lyman, the person living there had been smoking on the deck, and indications are that the fire started at the corner of the house on the back deck.

Lyman says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by Sheldon and Hartley firefighters. He says Sheldon’s aerial truck crew cut a hole in the roof for ventilation.

Chief Lyman reports that the house will probably be totaled, but the insurance company will make the final determination. The value is expected to be somewhere in the $200,000 range. He tells us that the person living there was lucky to get out as there were no smoke alarms, and she works nights, so was asleep when the fire started.

The Red Cross and family have been called in to help.

He says the 33 firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three and a half hours.
