George Man Faces Felony OWI Charge After Arrest Near Doon

Doon, Iowa — A George man has been arrested on felony OWI charges after a traffic stop near Doon.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 43-year-old Bradley Dykstra of George is accused of driving while intoxicated for the third or subsequent time.

In his statement, the deputy says Dykstra was seen swerving from side to side along 240th Street and crossing into oncoming lanes while heading uphill. The deputy says Dykstra admitted to drinking. He says he had bloodshot watery eyes, a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath, open alcoholic containers, impaired balance, slurred speech and an unsteady gait. The deputy says Dykstra failed field sobriety tests and registered over 0.08 blood alcohol on a portable breathalyzer. He tells us Dykstra was transported to the Lyon County Jail and a search warrant was obtained for his blood draw.

Since this would be his third conviction, Dykstra was charged with third or subsequent offense operating while intoxicated, a class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of open container and failure to maintain control.

Dykstra entered a plea of not guilty and has waived his initial appearance. He is set to be arraigned on March 3rd.

At last report, Dykstra remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of bond.
