Las Vegas Man Faces Felony After Drugs Allegedly Found In Jail

Sheldon, Iowa — A Las Vegas man has been arrested on felony contraband charges after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a controlled substance in jail.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sheldon Police Department, 32-year-old Carlos Armendariz of Las Vegas was arrested on Thursday.

In his statement, the officer says once at the jail Armendariz was found to be in possession of a makeshift pipe and tin foil in his pocket. The officer says Armendariz admitted that the items may be fentanyl. Armendariz is said to have admitted to using approximately two hours before the stop in Sheldon.

Armendariz was charged with possession of contraband in a correctional institution. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of operating under the influence and possession of a controlled substance, both first offense, interference with official acts, no valid license, failure to maintain registration plates, and dark windows or windshield.

He faces a preliminary hearing on February 8th.

At last report, Armendariz remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar on a $5000 cash or surety bond.
