Police Chief & School Superintendent: No Weapon, No Threats, Only A Rumor That Was Found To Be False

Sheldon, Iowa — There were a few tense moments for some in Sheldon on Friday. But it turned out to be an untrue rumor.

Sheldon Interim Police Chief Eric Meinecke tells us that there was a rumor that someone had a gun at Sheldon High School. Meinecke tells us the rumor was brought to the attention of law enforcement.

He says the Sheldon Police Department investigation into the untrue rumor continues.

He says at this time, there is no safety concern to students or the community.

Meinecke reached out to KIWA on Saturday morning to clarify and emphasize that there was no weapon found at the school, and that, while there was a rumor, no threats were even made.

Sheldon Community School District Superintendent Cory Myer sent a message to parents on Saturday morning as well. It says “Someone made an untrue accusation about a weapon, and unfortunately, that misinformation/rumor spread. Administration acted quickly to determine there was no truth to the rumor, and no student or staff member were ever in any danger. After determining that the rumor was untrue and no students or staff were in danger, any additional steps taken were done so out of care for the situation. The safety and security of our students and staff continues to be our top priority. We appreciate your continued trust and partnership in keeping our schools a safe space for learning.”
