Rock Valley Area Fire Claims A Life

Rock Valley, Iowa — One person died and another was sent to the hospital after a house fire in Rock Valley on Monday.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office tells us that just before 6:10 a.m., the Rock Valley Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 report of a residential fire that occurred at 2096 340th Street, seven miles southwest of Rock Valley.

Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis says that when crews arrived at the scene, they found the entire house was engulfed in flames.

Eshuis says the homeowner, 67-year-old Mike Smit, was sent to Hegg Health Center to receive treatment for his injuries.

Once the fire was extinguished, Eshuis says, responders found a woman in the home’s basement. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Rock Valley Fire Chief in conjunction with the Iowa State Fire Marshal.

Eshuis says the Rock Valley Ambulance Squad, the Hull Fire Department, the Ireton Fire Department, the Sioux Center Fire Department, and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the response to the fire call.
