Sheldon Fire Company Extinguishes Thursday Ditch Fire

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called out for two separate ditch fire calls on Thursday, January 9, 2025, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 6:20 a.m., and then again about 11:00 a.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to reports of two grass fires. The first one was reportedly near exit 33 on Highway 60. Hindt tells us they never did find that fire. The second one was near 5052 320th Street, about a mile east of the Highway 18 and 60 interchange on Highway 18.

The chief says the fire department saw a fire in the north ditch as they approached the scene.

Hindt says no injuries were reported.

He says they assume something had fallen off a truck and started the blaze, as they found a part of a wheel bearing near the origin of the fire.

Chief Hindt reports that only about 50 feet of ditch grass burned in the north ditch.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about a half an hour.
