Hull, Iowa — A Sheldon man has been arrested on a felony burglary charge after he allegedly entered a home uninvited while the occupants were at home.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 45-year-old Wayne Koele of Sheldon is accused of entering a garage uninvited and stealing a partial pack of cigarettes. He was arrested on Sunday.
In his statement, the deputy says the victim reports his home in Hull was entered by a subject during the night. His Ring Doorbell camera recorded a video of the person entering through the back door of his garage. The victim did not see the video until 11:00 the following morning. The victim, his wife, and child were home at the time the person entered, according to the deputy. The victim reported he was missing a partial pack of cigarettes from the garage. After reviewing the short video of the subject with family and friends, the subject was identified as Koele. Koele is a cousin of the victim. The deputy says Koele admitted to entering the garage without permission, on that date and time, to get some cigarettes. Koele states he did not have money for cigarettes and knew the victim would have some in his garage.
Koele was charged with Second-Degree Burglary, a class C felony. If convicted on that charge, Koele could face up to ten years in prison.
He faces a preliminary hearing next Tuesday, May 11th.
Koele was booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City, and was released the next day after posting bond.
