Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon woman and a Sanborn woman were taken to the hospital after an accident in Sheldon.
The Sheldon Police Department reports that about 6:15 PM on Friday, June 12, 2015, 72-year-old Mavis Poppema of Sheldon was driving a 2007 Chrysler westbound on Highway 18. Fifty-two year-old Judy Prins of Sanborn was southbound on Eighteenth Avenue in a 2006 Chevy SUV.
The report says that Poppema did not stop for the red traffic signal. The officer’s report says Prins was attempting a left turn onto the highway on a green light, and the vehicles collided.
SCAT transported both Poppema and Prins to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.
Both Poppema’s Chrysler and Prins’s Chevy were totaled. The Chrysler sustained an estimated $7500 in damages, and the Chevy sustained an estimated $7000 in damages.
Poppema was charged with failure to obey a traffic signal.
Sheldon firefighters and EMA personnel assisted the police and emergency medical technicians on the scene.
