Boyden Firefighters Extinguish Two Fires Saturday Afternoon

Boyden, Iowa — Boyden and Sheldon firefighters were called out to a fire on Saturday, November 9, 2019, near Boyden.

According to Boyden Fire Assistant Chief Angie Paulsen, about 5:00 p.m., the Boyden Fire Department was called to the report of a field fire near 4238 330th Street, two miles east, a mile south, and a half-mile east of Boyden. However, she says they were already on a call at that time, so they provided a few firefighters, but called for help from the Sheldon Fire Company.

The assistant chief says the firefighters saw a grass field on fire as they approached the scene. She says they used water to fight the fire.

Assistant Chief Paulsen says no injuries were reported.

She says the cause of the fire was a brush pile fire that went out of control.

Assistant Chief Paulsen reports that there was minimal damage to the field, as less than an acre burned.

She says the four Boyden and twelve Sheldon firefighters who responded were on the scene for about a half an hour.

Paulsen says that the other call was for a downed power line at 2782 Jay Avenue, northwest of Boyden, and the call came in at about 4:45 p.m.

She says the issue was a bad splice in the power line, which started the pole on fire. She says minimal grass in the ditch also burned.

No injuries were reported. She says MidAmerican Energy also responded to the scene, and that firefighters were on that scene for about 30 minutes as well.
