Electrical Box Receives $25,000 Damage When Struck By Payloader

Rock Rapids, Iowa — $25,000 in damage was reported after a piece of heavy equipment struck a utility box and light pole in Rock Rapids late Friday afternoon.

According to a release from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, about 5:00 Friday afternoon (August 23rd), a 1974 Caterpillar wheelloader/payloader, owned and operated by Harlan Classen, was northbound headed for North 3rd Avenue East in Rock Rapids, when the machine lost power crossing Highway 9, causing its steering and brakes to fail. Authorities say the loader continued north until it struck a utility box and light pole owned by Rock Rapids Municipal Utilities near Dusty’s Auto Body.

Deputies say the estimated cost to repair the utility box is about $25,000. The loader wasn’t damaged in the incident.
