Granville Fire Department Has Busy Wednesday Afternoon

Granville , Iowa — The Granville Fire Department had a busy day on Wednesday.

According to Fire Chief Karl Kellen, it all started about 1:30 p.m. when, the Granville Fire Department was called to the report of a controlled burn out of control at 4726 480th Street, two miles south and a mile east of Granville.

The chief says the farmer was cleaning up the acreage and burning some trees when some embers started the cornfield on fire. While they were still at the station after that call, they were called to 500th Street and Nettle Avenue, which is three and a half miles east and four miles south of Granville for the report of a ditch on fire. He says they found what looked to be an intentional ditch burn, but since no one was there watching the fire, they had to put it out. Then, when they were on their way back to town from that call, they got called back to the first fire location of the day, where the wind had caught an ember and blew it onto the roof of an old corn crib, and now the roof was on fire. Kellen says a barn caught fire too. But the good thing is they were scheduled to be destroyed anyway, so instead of putting out the fires, he says they monitored them while they burned.

Kellen says no injuries were reported.

He tells us they were assisted by the Paullina Fire Department at both of the last two calls, and by the Hospers Fire Department at the corn crib and barn fire.

He says the Granville firefighters who responded were out fighting fires from about 1:30 p.m. until just about 6:00.
