One Location, Two Accidents

Sheldon, Iowa — Sioux County deputies dealt with a pair of traffic accidents Sunday evening south of Sheldon on Highway 60.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was called to Highway 60, three miles south of Sheldon around 7:15 Sunday night to the report of an accident. Officials say 44-year old Pedro Pena of Sheldon was northbound on Highway 60 in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup when he struck a deer on the roadway.

According to authorities, Pena reported minor injuries, but declined further medical attention. A passenger in Pena’s pickup was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center  by SCAT.

Deputies say Pena’s pickup sustained about $12-thousand in damage in the mishap.

Then, while deputies were still investigating the Pena accident, another crash occurred at the same location. Deputies say that 32-year old Jason Kunkel of Sheldon was northbound on Highway 60 in a 2003 GMC Sierra, when he slowed his vehicle to yield for emergency personnel working on the previous accident scene, when he was struck in the rear by a 1997 Dodge Dakota, driven by 60-year old Matt Ascherl of Sheldon.

No injuries were reported in the second mishap. Deputies estimate the damage to Kunkel’s GMC at about $5-thousand, with Ascherl’s Dodge sustaining about $4-thousand in damage.

Deputies say Ascherl was cited for Following Too Closely.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Sheldon Police Department, SCAT, and the Sheldon Fire Department.
