UPDATE: Overnight Blaze Heavily Damages Sheldon Home

Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon residence was heavily damaged in an overnight blaze.

According to Sheldon Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt, the Sheldon Fire Company was summoned at 1:30 this (Friday) morning to a house fire at 619 3rd Avenue. Upon arrival, Hindt says firefighters found that the occupants were out of the house. He says they observed heavy fire on the rear deck with fire extending up the side of the house and into the roof.

Shortly after arriving on-scene, Sheldon firefighters summoned the Sanborn Fire Department for assistance in battling the blaze.

Firefighters mounted an exterior attack and then moved to an interior attack.  As the fire extended into the ceiling and attic area and flames were coming out of the roof, firefighters moved to a defensive attack from above with the ladder truck.  Hindt says fire crews removed most of the second floor ceiling.

Hindt says the home received heavy damage and is believed to be a total loss, and the residents lost all of their belongings.

Sheldon Fire was assisted by Sanborn Fire, SCAT, Sheldon Police, O’Brien County Sheriff’s office and O’Brien County EMA.

Fire crews left the scene at 5:30 am, and the Sheldon Fire Company was back in service at 6:30 am.
