Sheldon Woman Taken To Hospital After Tuesday Accident

Sheldon, Iowa– A Sheldon woman was taken to the hospital after an accident in Sheldon on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

The Sheldon Police Department reports that at about 7:00 p.m., 44-year-old Laura De La Cruz Contreras of Sheldon was driving a 2012 Dodge northbound on 3rd Avenue, near the Italian Cowboy. They tell us that 71-year-old Marlene Heerde of Sheldon was westbound on Highway 18 in a 2019 Dodge minivan.

The report says that De La Cruz Contreras stopped at the stop sign, and proceeded through the intersection, but allegedly failed to yield from the stop sign and struck the Heerde minivan.

The Sheldon Community Ambulance Team took Heerde to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

De La Cruz Contreras’s Dodge sustained $3000 in damages, and Heerde’s Dodge minivan sustained $10,000 in damages.

De La Cruz Contreras was charged with failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign and no valid driver’s license.

The Sheldon Fire Company and Sheldon EMA assisted at the scene.
