Ireton, Iowa — A pursuit that started in Sioux City ended in a crash near Ireton after crossing all of Plymouth County from south to north early Wednesday morning.
According to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, about 1:30 a.m., their dispatch center was advised of a vehicle that had just fled the Sioux City Police Department. The vehicle was last seen entering Plymouth County going north on K22 (also known as the Perry Creek Road) from the C80 area.
They tell us Plymouth County deputies responded to the general area and at about 1:35 a.m., a deputy met a vehicle matching the description. The deputy turned around to attempt to verify the description. They tell us the vehicle began to accelerate away from the deputy before he had even activated his emergency lights.
Once the emergency lights were active the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit ensued, and the vehicle continued north on K22 at speeds of 100-110 MPH. At the south intersection of K22 and Hwy 3 east of Le Mars, another deputy was able to successfully deploy stop sticks and deflate the left front tire.
They tell us the vehicle continued to attempt to elude the deputies and ultimately drove into the ditch near Hwy 10 and K22 in Sioux County, about three miles northwest of Ireton.
The driver, who was identified as 35-year-old Russell Devarn Camp of Minnesota was taken into custody without further incident. Camp was taken to the Plymouth County Jail.
He faces felony counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and felony eluding, and misdemeanor charges of OWI drugged, speeding: 100 in a 55 zone, no valid driver’s license, and no insurance.
The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office says the Hawarden Police Department, Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Ireton Ambulance, and Ireton Fire and Rescue assisted them.
At last report, Camp was being held on a $10,000 bond at the Plymouth County Jail.
