Six People Injured, Three Airlifted After Wednesday Accident

Sioux Center, Iowa — Six people were injured and three of them were airlifted in three helicopters after an accident near Sioux Center on Wednesday, June 7th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 3:20 p.m., 64-year-old Mikell Mouw‐Uphoff of Sioux Falls, SD was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer northbound on Highway 75 near 360th Street, also known as B30 or the Carmel blacktop. They report that eighteen-year-old Madison Pottebaum of Sioux Center was driving a 2006 Ford Escape eastbound on B30. Pottebaum reported the brake system malfunctioned on the Ford, and she was unable to stop for the stop sign at Highway 75. Her vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by The Mouw‐Uphoff Trail Blazer.

Six people were taken to area hospitals as a result of the accident. The Hull Ambulance Squad took Mouw-Uphoff to the Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. The Sioux Center Ambulance Squad took Pottebaum, 68-year-old Colleen Bomgaars and 13-year-old Callie Van Beek, all of Sioux Center to the Sioux Center Health Hospital. The Hull Ambulance Squad also took 12-year-old Camryn Pottebaum of Sioux Center to Sioux Center Health, and 11-year-old Josie Bomgaars of Orange City to Hegg Memorial in Rock Valley.

Three of the patients were later airlifted to Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Sanford Airmed transported Colleen Bomgaars, Mercy Air Care transported Camryn Pottebaum, and Avera Careflight transported Josie Bomgaars.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that the Sioux Center Fire Department, the Sioux Center Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol also assisted with the response to the accident, which they say remains under investigation.
