Sunday Fire Destroys Hawarden Home

Hawarden, Iowa — A house was destroyed in a fire on Sunday, March 19, 2023, in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, at about 5:20 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a house fire at 806 Avenue K in Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department saw flames from an upstairs bedroom window as they approached the scene. He says they used exterior attack and then an offensive indoor attack to fight the fire.

Schiefen says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Ireton Fire Department through their auto aid agreement.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature.

Chief Schiefen reports that the structure was totaled. According to the chief, he contacted Sioux County Emergency Management and they helped the occupants of the home contact the American Red Cross for emergency housing.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours the first time and they were called back for a flare-up later that night and were out for another hour and a half.
