Teens Injured In Spencer Accident

Spencer, Iowa — Three Spencer nineteen-year-olds were taken to the hospital after an accident near Spencer.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 9:30 AM on Friday, May 29, 2015, 19-year-old Samuel Van Berkum of Spencer was driving a 2010 Chevy southbound on Highway 71, south of the north Y. Thirty-four year-old Aaron Skatges of Dakota City, NE was southbound on 71 in a 2010 semi.

The report says that Van Berkum failed to yield the right of way to the semi as it slowed down to turn. Van Berkum rear-ended the semi, says the report.

The Spencer Ambulance took Van Berkum and two passengers in his vehicle, 19-year-old Benjamin Fox and 19-year-old Kaleb Dandy, both of Spencer to the Spencer Hospital.

Van Berkum’s Chevy was totaled. The semi sustained $2500 in damages.

The Spencer Police, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement, and the Spencer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
