Three Taken To Area Hospitals After Crash Near Hartley

Hartley, Iowa — Three people were sent to area hospitals as the result two-vehicle collision at the corner of 360th Street and Vine Avenue, which is four miles south of Hartley, late Monday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2018 Ram pickup, driven by 51-year-old Jeffrey Robert Sauter of Jackson, Minnesota, was westbound on 360th Street. Troopers say Sauter stopped at the stop sign at the Vine Avenue intersection, then proceeded into the intersection, striking a southbound 2003 Buick Park Avenue, driven by 72-year-old Sharon Lee Maaland of Hartley. According to the report, both vehicles came to rest in the southwest ditch.

Troopers say Maaland’s Buick had a small electrical fire after the collision, which was extinguished by a bystander before rescue crews arrived on-scene.

Maaland was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Hartley Ambulance. A passenger in her car, 75-year-old Irvin George Maaland of Hartley was taken to MercyOne in Primghar by the Hartley Ambulance, while Sauter was taken to MercyOne by the Sutherland Ambulance, according to troopers.

According to the report, assisting at the scene were Hartley Fire & Rescue, Sutherland Fire & Rescue, O’Brien County deputies, and ambulances from Hartley and Sutherland.
