Three Vehicle Crash Sends One To Hospital

Sanborn, Iowa — A three-vehicle crash northwest of Sanborn sent a Rock Valley resident to the hospital around 12:45 Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1995 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 63-year-old Mark Allen Van Beek of Sanborn was westbound on 300th Street and allegedly failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Olive Avenue, and collided with the left rear of a pickup driven by 24-year-old Gerardo Leanos-Ruvalcabe of Rock Valley, who was southbound on Olive Avenue. The impact then reportedly spun the Leanos-Ruvalcabe pickup into the left front section of a 2015 Freightliner Semi, which was stopped, facing north and waiting to be able to turn onto 300th Street. The semi was driven by 38-year-old Nathan Lee Holtz of Sanborn.

Troopers say a passenger in the Leanos-Ruvalcaba truck was taken to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Another passenger complained injuries but wasn’t taken to the hospital.

Authorities estimate damage to Van Beek’s truck at $4,000, damage to the Holtz semi at $10,000 and damage to Leanos-Ruvalcabe’s pickup at $10,000. Damage to a Northwest REC power pole damaged in the mishap was estimated at $3,500.

Van Beek was reportedly cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign and Yield Right Of Way.
