Two Injured, One Flown To Sioux Falls After 3-Vehicle Crash Near Sioux Center

Sioux Center, Iowa — One person was airlifted to a hospital, and a second taken by ambulance, in the aftermath of a three-vehicle crash on Highway 75, south of Sioux Center, Tuesday evening.

According to a report by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened two miles south of Sioux Center shortly after 6:30 Tuesday evening.

The report says 65-year-old Lyle Van De Griend, of Orange City, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup southbound on Highway 75. 55-year-old Scott Snyder, of Alton, was driving a 2012 Kia Forte southbound on Highway 75 behind Van De Griend, and 20-year-old Justin Van Otterloo, of Rock Rapids, was driving a 2003 Peterbilt semi-tractor pulling a livestock trailer northbound on Highway 75.

Deputies say Van De Griend stopped for oncoming vehicles before attempting a left turn onto 440th Street when Snyder struck the rear of Van De Griend’s pickup, pushing it into the northbound lane where he was struck by Van Otterloo’s semi. After striking Van De Griend, Van Otterloo lost control of his vehicle, entered the west ditch where the truck and trailer came to rest on the BNSF Railway property.

According to authorities, Snyder was transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health, and was later airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls for further treatment of his injuries. Van De Griend was transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health for treatment of his injuries. Van Otterloo did not report any injuries.

The Chevrolet pickup sustained approximately $10,000 in damage. The Peterbilt and trailer sustained and estimated $25,000 in damage. The Kia sustained approximately $8,500 in damage, while the railroad property sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Sioux Center Fire Department, Sioux Center Ambulance and Sioux Center Police Department.
