PHOTOS: Roof Stripped From Strip Mall

Sheldon, Iowa — A severe thunderstorm that passed through the area overnight caused damage to trees, caused a power outage and heavily damaged a strip mall in Sheldon.

During the wee hours of Friday morning, the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for most of the KIWA listening area.

According to O’Brien County EMA Coordinator Jared Johnson, high winds caused damage to trees throughout O’Brien County. In Sheldon, there were some power-lines knocked down, and MidAmerican Energy responded quickly to restore power to the affected areas.

The strip mall located just west of the Highway 18 and 60 interchange in Sheldon received substantial roof damage.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the peak wind gust, as recorded at the Sheldon Regional Airport, was 64 mph.

O’Brien County EMA reports tree limbs down on several O’Brien County roads and on Highway 59, north of Highway 18. Likewise, several limbs were down around Sheldon.

Sheldon Street Department crews were out, helping to remove several tree limbs off of the Sheldon streets to open pathways.
