Building In Downtown Spencer Heavily Damaged By Fire Earlier This Year Is Coming Down

Spencer, Iowa — Demolition is underway on a building in downtown Spencer that was heavily damaged by fire back in January of this year.

Crews Thursday began tearing down the building at 221 Grand Avenue. The work started on the alley side of the building and is progressing toward the Grand Avenue frontage.

A cause of the January 22nd fire was never pinpointed, but it was believed to have started in an apartment on the upper level.

The building occupied the better portion of a block in downtown Spencer.

Officials say the structural integrity of the building was compromised by the fire.
