Big Sioux River Days Is This Weekend In Hawarden

Hawarden, Iowa — In addition to Celebration Days this weekend in Sheldon, there are also festivals in Hawarden and Sutherland.

In Hawarden, Chamber Director Cathie Brown tells us festivities get underway on Friday night with the West Sioux football game, where an alumnus will also be inducted into the hall of fame. She tells us about Saturday.

Sunday’s activities start with an outdoor worship service at the community pavilion, says Brown.

Labor Day Monday is the big day at Big Sioux River Days, says Brown.

But that’s not all. Modern life in the southwest corner of Sioux County didn’t begin with Hawarden. It began with the village of Calliope, which was incorporated in 1882 and was once the county seat, but was annexed into Hawarden a few years later. But the people of Hawarden are trying to keep the memory of Calliope alive, and a number of activities take place there as well.

She says by the end of the weekend, you’ll probably be “stuffed and tired.”
